Out With the Old and In with The New

A large garden is nice, but it can sometimes feel lifeless. Many gardens are just spaces of grass that add no character to a property. This is the problem our client had before we came in and breathed life into this empty green space, turning it into a stoned haven that was enjoyed by the whole family.

However, what made this job stand out was the curved stone archway that welcomes you into the garden. An archway is a hard design to pull off, but if you get it right like we did, the result is outstanding.

The Problem

Our customer didn’t have much love for their previous garden. It was big enough but lacked character. It was also steep with a hard surface and a lot of stones, which made it unsafe for the client’s children to play outside.

Although creating a new garden and building a wall is never easy, what made this job even more challenging was the large trees that stood at the back of the property. With them in the way, it was impossible to build the Yorkshire stone wall or refurbish the back of the garden the way our client wanted.

The Soloution

The first step was to work in partnership with our customers to design something they loved. Our expert designer used bespoke software to show them how their garden could look. We then tweaked the design to ensure it looked exactly how the customer wanted before commencing work on the build.

The agreed solution was to replace the original garden entirely. To do this, we used a small digger to remove the existing turf and move any large rocks out of the way. With the old garden gone, we were able to lay fresh turf, creating the glowing green space that you can see in our ‘after’ images.

Before we could commence work on the wall and archway, we had to remove the large trees to the rear of the garden. We use experts in every stage of our process, so we subcontracted the work to one of our partners, who is a tree surgeon, and had them cut down the trees and remove the trunks.

Once the trees were out of the way, we were able to start work on the main feature: the beautiful Yorkshire stone archway.

Our client wanted to feel a connection with ‘Yorkshire’ and its rich culture. With this in mind, we decided to use the old renowned method of dry stone walling, encircling the property with light Yorkshire stone that felt like a natural extension of the garden itself. We handpicked each stone, ensuring a seamless blend that was joined together by the intricate archway.

We then added a pond, providing a daily fish-feeding delight for the children, and crafted a social corner at the garden’s rear so friends and family could enjoy this peaceful walled retreat in the warm summer months.

To finish the space off, we planted a series of luscious green flowers that encircled the area and added a large sitting stone that added an artistic feel. This garden now feels like a haven, one that’s completely natural and untouched by man.
