An English country gardern

Creating Beauty from The Wreckage

The challenge of the Farnhill project was to simultaneously create and connect beauty. What was once a luscious garden was now a torn-up mess that was almost inaccessible from the lovely home that it belonged to.

Our role on this project was to create a stairway and path that connected the two spaces. The challenge was doing so while keeping the natural appeal of the garden, and leaving enough space for it to be enjoyed in summer months.

The Problem

Farnhill House had undergone a refurbishment, and although it improved the aesthetic appeal of the house, it left the garden in quite a state. Much of the garden had been ripped up, leaving deep trenches that spanned the area. These over hanged with loose rocks, grass roots and weeds.

It wasn’t the sightliest of outdoor areas, and the uneven surface made it impossible to stand on our enjoy. Since the patio doors look directly onto the garden, it was a constant eyesore to the home’s inhabitants. Furthermore, much of the stone left over from the refurb had been dumped in the garden, which only added to the mess.

The Solution

Our solution was two-fold. Firstly, we had to fix the garden, turning it into a beautiful haven that matched the radiance of the home it belonged to. Secondly, we had to utilise the left-over stone, ensuring that it did not go to waste.

The first thing we did was level the garden, removing the trenches, weeds and rocks to make a nice, even surface. Once this was done, we laid fresh turf. This made the garden usable again, with lush green grass that glowed in the morning light.

After this, we created a stone pathway that connected the home and garden. This included a stone patio directly outside the doors that could be used for gatherings and BBQs in the summer sun. The pathway then sloped around to a second set of stone stairs which led directly to the garden.

We planted greenery around this pathway to create a natural atmosphere, ensuring that you felt at one with nature with every step you took.

The stone we used to lay the path, build the walls and create the staircase were the same ones left over from the renovation. Recycling the stone was better for the environment, as no new materials were used, and kept the costs down for our clients.

Turn your home into a natural wonder

The Result

Farnhill’s garden was transformed from an eye-sore that ruined our client’s day whenever they looked out of the window into a natural beauty that was the envy of the street. Recycling the stone kept costs down for our clients, and the way we designed the curving staircase ensured that we maximised the space, leaving plenty of room for gatherings with friends and family.

The fresh turf and opulent flowers planted by our team left the garden looking as good as new, and the vibrant colours perfectly contrasted with the paleness of the Yorkshire stone walls.

Overall, this project demonstrates that we can create even the most beautiful results from the worst conditions.
